Investigating the typology of "violence against women" in Iranian newspapers: a case study of Etemad online newspaper

Abstract
Violence against women is considered a significant social issue that, in addition to its individual impact on women, has numerous negative effects on the family system and, consequently, on society, posing various threats. The media, particularly newspapers, play an effective role in shaping the culture of societies. The phenomenon of violence against women is a problem that has garnered attention not only in Iran but also globally, leading to extensive efforts to combat it. Given the news values, this issue should hold an important place in the press, as it embodies at least three news values: "frequency, inclusivity, and confrontation." Therefore, it is essential that this topic is among the key concerns of newspapers.

This study examines the representation of violence against women in the Online daily newspaper "Etemad," one of the most widely circulated newspapers in Iran. The content of all pages from the six months of 1402 was analyzed to determine whether this newspaper addressed various types of violence against women (both acute and non-acute) and whether it provided solutions and analyses in its news coverage and content production regarding this issue.

The research findings revealed that during this period, "Etemad" published 136 issues, with over half containing articles on the phenomenon of violence against women. These articles appeared across multiple sections of the newspaper, including incidents, society, sports, art and literature, and politics. The study separately identified the types of violence against women that received the most and least attention each month and assessed whether the content produced was analytical or merely news coverage. Approximately half of the published articles on the subject of violence against women were accompanied by analysis and detail and were prominently placed within the newspaper.
